Day 1
Long Leaf Pine Hike
We were lucky enough to walk up on this garter snake. Ansun spotted him for us. We were very excited because we have a baby garter snake in our room. Now we know what he will look like when he grows up.
First we went to the burn plots. We explored each plot to see the differences in a new burn and a plot that has not been burned in a while. The new burn had so much more green understory and really looked pretty.
Ms. Cuchens joined us on our hike. We were so glad to have her with us.
We also learned how to read a compass and track turtles with homing devices.
Day 2
Museum
We were at the musem at Biophilia and we saw some exciting things. There were snakes, turtles, and we learned about photosynthesis.
Mr. Paul let us all touch a box turtle called Rocky. She had such long sharp fingernails that she almost scratched our arms. She also had such strong arms and legs that if she even gave a little push she could have slipped out of our grasp.
Mr.Paul also let us see a 7 month old armadillo named Eeyore. He let us feel him and see his hairy belly. He felt like a basketball only without the seams.
Day 3
Harvester Ants
At Biophillia we did an experiment to see what kind of seeds Harvester ants like best; millet or thistle.
We measured how wide the ant nest was. It was 71 cm. They surround their hill with charcoal, small rocks, seed shells, and insect parts.
When we were on the trail we saw a huge tree that was on the ground. We thought a lightning hit it. There were holes that other animals might live in. There were also two spider webs.It was awesome!!!!!!!!
